JoAnna Garcia Swisher is taking on a whole new kind of role. You may have seen her as Cheyenne Hart Montgomery in “Reba,” or more recently as Maddie Townsend in Netflix’s “Sweet Magnolias,” but her latest gig on Netflix’s “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” marks her first time as a host.
“The job itself, as a host, was a new one for me, but it was so exciting, and I was so proud to be a part of a show that celebrates queer relationships,” she tells POPSUGAR. “It really opens up the door to look a little bit deeper into the dynamics of queer relationships, as well as the challenges.”
“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” follows the structure of its parent show, “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On,” focusing on five couples as they navigate a trial period of married life with their partner — and then with someone else. From there, they decide once and for all if they want to actually tie the knot.
For Swisher, despite all the inevitable drama, the most rewarding part of the experience was the love she was able to witness between the contestants. “At the heart of it, there’s just so much love between the people that participated in the show, and it was just really amazing to see how vulnerable they were, and how willing they were to go there and experience the task at hand,” she says. “. . . It was just really amazing to see them go through this process.”
Still, she notes, her hosting duties meant that she didn’t get to spend quite as much time getting to know the cast that she would have liked. “I wanted to spend more time with all the people that were a part of the show. I feel like I got to know them so intimately just watching their stories unfold, but I didn’t get to gab it up with them as much as I wanted to,” she says, noting that fortunately, “at the end I got to spend a little bit more time with them.” Ultimately, though, she saw her hosting role as a supportive position. “I was just there to help drive the experiment along and the process along, and it was really just amazing to see how it all ended up,” she said.
Swisher herself doesn’t identify as queer, a fact that one contestant confirms in the very first frames of the show. Still, she told Elite Daily that her sexuality “didn’t really come up” during the filming process. She’s also careful to acknowledge that there are differences between straight and queer relationships. “Obviously, there are so many special nuances and complexities to queer relationships, which I think are really important to highlight and celebrate and shine light on,” Swisher told the outlet on May 24. “It’s a huge reason why this show is so special and so important.”
“The Ultimatum: Queer Love” comes amidst a challenging time for the LGBTQ+ community, with anti-trans and anti-drag laws ramping up across the country. It feels like the right time for a show that celebrates queerness, queer love, and queer community, and Swisher just seems grateful to be along for the ride. “I think it’s such an important show and I’m so excited for people to see it,” Swisher says. “It’s so fantastic.”

JoAnna Garcia Swisher is ready for fans to see all of the highs and lows that will come on this season of The Ultimatum: Queer Love.
As Netflix drops the newest season of the reality show — which is a continuation of its hit series The Ultimatum — Garcia Swisher, 43, opens up to PEOPLE about what it was like stepping into the hosting role.
“It was really one of those experiences that I was profoundly changed by,” she says. “I didn’t know what to expect when they asked me to do the show. I was just so excited that Netflix was doing a show that was going to celebrate queer love. I was like, ‘Yes, I’m there. I’m in.'”
However, not long after the excitement, the pressure set in for the actress. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve never done this before. How do I do this? How do I be there for them? How do I do all of it?'” she recalls.
Luckily, the cast and crew were quick to relieve her anxieties. “They just literally said, ‘Stop worrying’ — which is almost an impossibility for me. But I just was along for the journey,” says Garcia Swisher. “And [I’m] so humbled by the experience.”
Besides the support from the cast, Garcia Swisher says she turned to The Ultimatum season 1 hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey for advice.
“Of course I did [reach out to them],” she says. “Every season is different, I think. And so it’s like, you can’t really predict everything. But I went into this with an open heart, I tried to be the host that I felt was most true to me, and that’s sort of the advice that Vanessa [gave]: Just be you. And I thought, ‘OK, here you go.'”
Like the first season, The Ultimatum: Queer Love will follow five couples as they embark on a social experiment to test their relationships by seeing how a trial marriage would work with one another — as well as another partner. While one partner feels ready for marriage, the other doesn’t, so this ultimatum will help the couples decide if they want to say “I do” or call it quits.
This season’s couples consist of: Lexi, 25, who issued an ultimatum to Rae, 27; Mildred, 33, who issued an ultimatum to Tiff, 32; Yoly, 34, who issued an ultimatum to Mal, 36; Sam, 31, who issued an ultimatum to Aussie, 42, and Xander, 30, who issued an ultimatum to Vanessa, 30.
Garcia Swisher got a front row seat to the drama as she watched the five pairs develop new connections with the other couples and choose a partner for the trial marriages. (The trial marriage partnerships currently consist of: Lexi and Mal, Mildred and Aussie, Xander and Yoly, Vanessa and Rae, and Tiff and Sam.)
While helping the cast navigate their new “marriages” and ongoing love troubles, she says she leaned into her own marriage to former MLB player Nick Swisher for inspiration.
“It’s so interesting. My husband, I feel like he would do this job so beautifully too. He has so much respect for people in general and is such a great judge of character,” she shares. “Someone asked me [for] my five dating tips and the first one I gave was, ‘You’re the prize.’ Because my husband literally exists in this world believing that with every ounce of his being, no matter who you are, what you are, my husband always says, ‘You are the prize.'”
“And if you can really embody that notion, you can navigate things a lot easier or just have a lot more faith in the process,” she continues. “And so it left me feeling like there were so many times where I was sitting in that chair with these people and I thought, ‘I wonder what Nick would say in this moment.’ Because I have so much respect for him in that way. And I think he would add a lot of value.”
She adds, “And so our relationship and how he’s shown up for me really was able to shine through in the way that I was able to show up for them.”

JoAnna Garcia Swisher, along with the rest of us, is clamoring for Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias, which is slated to air this spring.
Sweet Magnolias takes place in the fictional town of Serenity and focuses on a working mom of three, Maddie Townsend (Swisher), and her two best friends from childhood, restauranteur Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott) and attorney Helen Decatur (Heather Headley).
The three close pals have seen one another through romance, marriages, divorce, career, family triumphs and tragedies, and a lot more. And it does all of this with a great deal of heart, relatable characters, and real-life ups and downs that make us want to keep coming back for more.
The series is based on the popular Sweet Magnolias novels by Sherryl Woods and was developed by Sheryl J. Anderson. Sweet Magnolias premiered on Netflix in May 2020 and became a place for “comfort TV watching” appreciated by the entire family.
When the three besties — Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen — sit around bearing their souls and “pour it on” during frequent “Margarita nights,” many viewers feel like they are sitting there providing a lot of laughs and a shoulder to cry on when the three women are sharing the chips, dips, and libations.
Being back together to film Season 3 was something that Swisher truly appreciated. “It’s the best. I love it. Brooke and Heather are two of my favorite people, and I love working with them,” Swisher recently told Monsters and Critics. “We just have this unique chemistry that felt like it was pretty instant. I can’t wait for everyone to come back to Serenity for Season 3.”
Read on for why we all need self-care time, how she has bonded with the actors on her hit Netflix show, and what she is excited about for Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias this spring.

Hey everyone! First, I want to apologize for my absence recently. I have been adjusting to starting a new job and finishing up my academic career, so my fan sites had to take a back seat for a few months. I’m now trying to play catch-up and get things back on track.
In November, JoAnna and Nick attended the premiere of her latest movie Christmas with the Campbells. Check out the photo gallery to see 18 photos from the event.

They know what’s real. JoAnna Garcia Swisher has plenty of romantic kissing scenes on Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias with leading man Justin Bruening, but her kids know the smooches are just for work.
“It doesn’t confuse them,” the former Reba actress, 43, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting her partnership with Mrs. T’s Pierogies. “Especially with Justin on Sweet Magnolias, they know Justin and his family and his wife so much. So we’ve kind of explained it in that way.”
Garcia Swisher (who plays Maddie Townsend on Sweet Magnolias) shares daughters Emerson, 9, and Sailor, 6, with husband Nick Swisher, who she married in 2010. Bruening (who plays Cal Maddox), meanwhile, has been married to wife Alexa Havins since 2005, and they share daughter Lexington, 12.
“I don’t think they’re super excited about it,” Garcia Swisher admitted to Us. “They’re not like, ‘Oh, that’s so fun to see, Mom,’ but they get it. They totally understand it. It doesn’t traumatize them — at least I don’t think.”
Between finishing filming season 3 of the Netflix drama late last year and raising two little ones, the Florida native knows that she has to make time for self-care.
“Lately, I’ve been trying to walk a little bit more, just get out of the house,” she told Us, noting that winter weather makes that more difficult so she has some indoor alternatives. “I like to read. I like to take baths. I journal. But I definitely am adamant about my space. It’s, like, there’s certain things in my recharging space that cannot be infiltrated, like my cozy blanket, a nice pillow, a comfy chair, chargers. My kids know not to steal the chargers from mommy’s recharging space.”
Having a space that’s all her own is key. “I think it’s so important to have your own little corner of the universe, because inevitably, as a mom, things get so crazy and we’re running around and firing on all cylinders,” Garcia Swisher explained. “It can be exhausting and it doesn’t take long to just give yourself a minute and recharge and it just makes everything so much better.”
That’s why she teamed up with Mrs. T’s Pierogies to share design tips and cash prizes to help moms create their own “recharging room” in their homes (as well as easy pierogi recipes to make family dinners simple). One deserving mama will win $20,000 and a personalized design by the actress for the ultimate “recharging room” in their home.
“I actually am a huge fan of Mrs. T’s Pierogies, and I have them in my freezer right now,” Garcia Swisher told Us. “But I was so excited when they said that they wanted to support moms, and so they created this All-Star Moms campaign and asked me to be a part of it, to help design recharging stations and inspire moms to take some time for themselves. And I thought, ‘This couldn’t be more of a perfect partnership.’”
Starting February 28 through March 28, anyone can nominate a deserving mom in their life (or themselves) for prizes by visiting the website for Mrs. T’s Pierogies.
