JoAnna Garcia Swisher appreciates her share of family films and romcoms. However, a project like Christmas with the Campbells allows her to flex acting somewhere she seldom ever goes; a raunchy holiday comedy. Another unique aspect of the film is that it’s a female director helming the project when others like it are often monopolized by men. The film follows Jess (Brittany Snow), who gets dumped by her boyfriend right before Christmas, but his parents still want to celebrate the holiday with her while their son is away. Then she meets his cousin, but Christmas gets a lot more complicated once the ex returns. Garcia-Swisher spoke to Bleeding Cool about reuniting with director Clare Niederpruem, how the film is a welcome change compared to her other work, co-star Julia Duffy, Monopoly, her favorite Christmas films, and her two cents on Die Hard as a Christmas film.
What intrigued you about ‘Christmas with the Campbells?’
Garcia Swisher: I love a good Christmas movie, and I’m always up for a little offbeat comedy. So mix the two, and I was in.
Did it feel like kind of a refreshing experience to do something like this?
Yeah, in a ton of ways. It’s working with really funny actors and getting to tell Vince Vaughn jokes and make each other laugh. It was refreshing and a lot of fun. I love doing comedy, but I’ve spent a lot of time as of late in the more heartfelt romance space, and it’s a nice little breath of fresh air for me.

There are so many things to be grateful for this year and one of them is that JoAnna Garcia Swisher is set to be everywhere on our screens very soon. Not only does the delightful actress have Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias in the can, she’s also featured in AMC+’s upcoming holiday feature Christmas with the Campbells (written by Vince Vaughn and A Christmas Story‘s Peter Billingsley), hosting Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Queer Love and building out her home-decor line for HSN.
A longtime favorite of TV Insider, we jumped at the chance to speak with her about taking the leap into design and how she has “battle-tested” her pieces with the help of her two daughters and husband, retired MLB star Nick Swisher. So just in time for your Black Friday frenzy, here she is being as lovely as her collection.
OK, as soon as I saw as ad for your HSN line pop up on my Instagram feed, I was like, “Oh we need to talk about this.” Because this is so exciting!
JoAnna Garcia Swisher: Oh my God, you’re so sweet. Yes, it’s been fun.
So when did this actually all start to germinate?
It really started during COVID. I was approached to kind of start this line and we started talking with HSN. Our original launch was supposed to be in the fall of 2021 but because of shipping delays, we weren’t able to launch then. So we ultimately ended up dropping in the spring of 2022, which was great. And every line has felt like a baby to me now, right? We were looking to do a holiday collection this year, but because of Covid-related issues, we weren’t able to do it. But we are gonna do a holiday capsule collection next year and I can’t tell you how excited I’m about that.
That’s what I’ve sort of been working on lately, that and our fall of 2023 line. That’s how far in advance we’re doing these things.
I am guessing you are sort of used to that kind of schedule with filming? You work on something for so long and then it doesn’t come out for six or eight months.
Well, that’s kind of what this year has been like! We just finished Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias, literally a couple of weeks ago, and then this movie Christmas with the Campbells I shot last January, which is coming out in December. And then I am hosting another show called The Ultimatum, which I shot even prior to that, like a year ago now! So pretty much everything that I worked on last year is coming out now. [Laughs]

Life is sweet for Joanna Garcia Swisher. The second season of her hit series, Sweet Magnolias, is set to debut this Thursday and she’s met the love of her life in former pro baseball player Nick Swisher (and has a gorgeous family to boot). The Florida-born actress has more things up her sleeve, so watch this space… But in the meantime, while she’s waiting to shoot her now-renewed-for-a-third-season series, she discusses the launch of her latest venture, her home decor line, Clover.
You have a new home décor line, Clover. What inspired you to start the line?
This line is something I’m SO excited for.
How would you say your own personal aesthetic is reflected in the line?
When I invest in home decor I tend to be very practical. I like knowing that I’m investing in timeless pieces that can be reinvented over and over again. During the design process I really think about all the stories I can tell with each piece. The more versatile an item is, the more I’m excited about it!.
What was your favorite part about designing Clover?
I love designing items that really lean into the season. Our spring collection is fun and colorful and feels so fresh. Fall is cozy and textured with a really rich palette.
How would you describe the ethos of Clover?
Clover is aspirational design that is completely attainable. We are as much a ‘feeling’ as we are line of beautiful decor. I believe joy can be found in even the most simple of pleasures.
