JoAnna Garcia Swisher’s family feels “blessed” to have welcomed several adopted animals into their home over the years. But one of their pets, in particular, has provided some unexpected challenges.
“Romeo, our Great Dane, is really smart, and he has learned how to open up the garbage can. It’s been really problematic,” the Sweet Magnolias star, 42, tells PEOPLE exclusively while promoting her Hill’s Pet Nutrition partnership benefitting NBC’s annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign.
“My husband [Nick Swisher]’s idea was to tie all of these bungee cords, and I was like, ‘But how are we ever going to easily throw something away?’ And [Romeo] knows it too, but he just can’t help himself. It’s his unbelievable trick,” she adds.
The Swisher family even had to install a device onto their front door to prevent the ever-curious Romeo from opening that up as well.
“We had someone come over, and I looked at our front door, and it looked scratched. And I said, ‘My God, what is that?’ And I found out that it was because of Romeo,” the Reba alum reveals. “He’s now learning how to open up the door, so we have a lever on our front door, and we have to change that hardware.”
“We have to get one that he can’t scratch and open and hold onto because he knows how to open things like that now,” Swisher adds.
Romeo, who the Swisher family rescued in 2018, is “a big old horse,” the actress jokes.
“He is just a love bug, but his best friends are the mini tiny chihuahuas that we have now,” she shares.
All in all, the Swisher family — which also includes the couple’s daughters Emerson Jay, 8, and Sailor Stevie, 5 — are grateful to care for all the animals they do.
“We were coming back from Atlanta where we shot Sweet Magnolias, and we drove because we’ve been living in Florida for the last little bit. We had a cat, and we had our four dogs, and we had our hamster, and we were all in an SUV. And we had no room for any luggage. Like, barely a snack bag could have fit in the car with all of our family,” she recalls.
“But I looked at my husband, and I just said, ‘We’re so blessed,'” she continues. “We have our two daughters here, all of our animals, and we are a traveling circus. It never ceases to amaze me.”
JoAnna’s love for animals has extended to her latest partnership with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which benefits NBC’s annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign. Hill’s Pet Nutrition invites all to post a pic of their pets on social media this month, using the hashtag #HillsForLife. Doing so will enter participants in a contest to win a year’s supply of pet food. Hill’s Pet Nutrition will donate $1 for every post made to Greater Good Charities until they hit $10,000.
“Animals, I think, bring so much to a home and to your life. And I think rescue pets know that they’ve been rescued and just the love that they have to give back is just immeasurable. We very much are committed to helping animals in need,” Swisher says, adding that this campaign is an excellent opportunity because it helps “pets and shelters that are in need of support.”

JoAnna Garcia Swisher has spilled the (sweet!) tea on Season 2 of Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias in a new interview with Parade.com. When viewers last saw Swisher’s character Maddie Townsend in the town of Serenity, things were anything but serene. The series’ Season 1 cliffhanger left fans wondering who else was involved in that horrific car accident—but it seems we won’t have to wait too long for an answer once the show returns.
As Swisher told Parade.com about what fans will see when Season 2 debuts, “There is no time jump. You will literally pick up right after the accident, and then just hold on to your hats cause the next 10 episodes are gonna be a wild ride.”
Maddie and her girlfriends will be pouring it out by the “gallons” in the sophomore season, which is full of new drama, and even sets up Sweet Magnolias for a possible (fingers crossed!) Season 3. “You are not leaving Season 2 without wondering what the heck is gonna happen in Season 3,” Swisher teased. “I can assure you that. Far more than who’s in the car.”
That’s not all Swisher talked about; she’s also teamed up with Hill’s Pet Nutrition to help get the word out about their Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign. And the best part is, there’s an easy way that you can help spread the word about this month-long event, which aims to support 1,000 animal shelters across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. “From now until September 19, we’re encouraging everyone to take a minute and, instead of posting about all the other things in the world, post about your pet, and use the hashtag #HillsForLife, and talk about your love for them,” Swisher explained. “With every #HillsForLife that is put on our social channels, Hill’s Pet Nutrition will donate $1 up to $10,000 to greater good charities, which will directly go to help shelters and shelter pets in North America. It’s an opportunity for us to brag and love on our furry loved ones, and it’s also directly going to pets that are in need and helping support shelters that work overtime to help animals that are looking for a better life.”

Jennifer September 14, 2021 Comments Off on JoAnna Garcia Swisher Just Told Us What’ll Go Down in “Sweet Magnolias” Season 2 Premiere and Why Fans Will Be ‘Shocked’
Fans shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a one-day seeing a Reba revival series.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher tells PEOPLE that she would be interested in reprising her role on the 2000 sitcom alongside the rest of the Reba McEntire led-cast.
“I think it’s been more than just thought about and something that I think we would all really love to be a part of,” she says while promoting her Hill’s Pet Nutrition partnership benefitting NBC’s annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign.
“It’s very much in our hearts and our minds and topics of conversations,” she continues. “I can assure you that if someone came to all of us and said that they wanted to do it, we’re all there ready with all of the stories.”
Reba ran for six seasons from 2001 to 2007 on The WB (later The CW). Steve Howey, Melissa Peterman, Christopher Rich, Scarlett Pomers and Mitch Holleman also starred on the series.
On Reba, Garcia Swisher played McEntire’s eldest daughter Cheyenne Montgomery (née Hart), who got pregnant during her senior year of high school and later wed her high school boyfriend Van Montgomery (Howey).
Just last year, McEntire also expressed interest in revisiting the series.
“We’d love to bring back the Reba TV show,” the singer, 66, previously said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “We had a lot more topics to talk about, stories to tell.”
But for now, Garcia Swisher is focusing on her partnership with Hill’s Pet Nutrition in support of NBC’s annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign. In September, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is inviting all to post a pic of their pets using the hashtag #HillsForLife, which will enter them in a contest to win a year’s supply of pet food.
For every post, Hill’s Pet Nutrition will donate $1 to Greater Good Charities until they hit $10,000.
“It’s really incredible to get an opportunity to align myself with a company that’s heart is in such a great place,” Garcia Swisher says. “They’re doing so much to help animals that are in need. But the Hill’s For Life campaign, it’s a great opportunity to make an impact. And in partnership with Minor League Baseball, they’re doing these incredible theme nights in 15 different markets.”
She continues, “In all of those cities, they’re going to be helping shelter pets and really getting in with the local community and saying, ‘Here’s your shelter and this is what they need,’ and also celebrating these incredible animals that we’ve welcomed into our life.”
